New Organization of Arctic DTU and DTU’s Arctic engagement

Effective around September 1, DTU will implement a reorganization of Arctic DTU. The aim of the reorganization is to sharpen strategic and organizational focus, establish stronger alignment between operations and strategy, and make better use of resources and collaboration across DTU.

As part of the reorganization, strategy, policy, and collaboration will be centrally anchored at the Office for Research, Advice and Innovation (AFRI).
DTU’s Arctic-related education, research, and innovation activities—as well as the operation and development of the campus and research facilities in Sisimiut will henceforth be organizationally anchored at DTU Sustain.

Arctic DTU’s current employees will be transferred as part of the reorganization: three employees to DTU Sustain and one employee to AFRI. Responsibility for Arctic safety will continue to be handled by an employee at DTU Construct on behalf of Arctic DTU.

As a central element of the reorganization, two new full-time positions will be established and filled as soon as possible:

  • Chief Officer Arctic Campus, manager of DTU Campus Sisimiut, who will be employed at DTU Sustain
  • Chief Arctic Officer, who will be employed at AFRI.

Chief Officer Arctic Campus, manager of DTU Campus Sisimiut responsibilities:

  • Daily operations and development of DTU Sisimiut Campus (in dialogue with CAS)
  • Staff management of Arctic DTU’s employees, reporting to the management at DTU Sustain
  • Responsible for the budget of Sisimiut campus and allocation of funds from DTU's agreement with the Government of Greenland.
  • Operation of DTU’s Arctic related educational activities, primarily taking place/originating from Sisimiut, in dialogue with the involved departments and the dean at DTU.
  • Collaboration with the Government of Greenland, the steering committee of Arctic DTU and the Chief Arctic Officer regarding the framework agreement
  • Campus support for teachers and researchers regarding logistics related to stays, teaching, and research taking place in Sisimiut
  • Coordination and collaboration with the other newly established position, Chief Arctic Officer
  • Collaboration with local partners and stakeholders in Greenland, including KTI
  • Operation and support of other activities based in Sisimiut, related to teaching and the research station

Chief Arctic Officer responsibilities:

  • Serve as the internal and external anchor point in AFRI for the university’s strategic, cross-cutting Arctic activities. Responsible for policy, strategy, framework agreements, PR, and coordination in the arctic region
  • Advisor for the management and Arctic DTU’s steering group
  • Close cooperation and coordination of activities with the administrative head of KTI
  • In addition to the Chief Arctic Officer, additional staff corresponding to 1,2 full-time equivalents will be allocated at AFRI to support this area. The organizational involvement of AFRI is expected to create significant synergy, partly because the department already manages framework agreements with ministries and provides support to the following centers: Security, Quantum og Maritime DTU. DTU’s other Arctic research and project activities etc., will continue to be run by the academic environments at the departments.

The new organization of Arctic DTU will take effect as soon as possible, in line with the onboarding of the two new employees.
